DOWNWARD MOBILITY is mentioned in this movie as some of a group of recent college graduates (preppies who give themselves the more specific moniker "uhbs") as they worry that their failure is inevitable. some have trustfunds while others only HAD one until the entrance of the evil stepmother.
this movie is slow as hell. but, it is a different look at young people than we normally see. these particular kids are trying very hard to "behave as expected." they long for more rigid social conventions (i guess this is a way to yearn for structure).
when one girl takes off with the group slut and a guy no one really trusts, two other male group members who like her want to travel out of town to rescue her. so, they try to rent a car. they go to pretty much every car rental company, but they don't have enough cash. when they find one cheap enough, they don't have a driver's license. they realize inability to even do that is maybe part of their problem.
they do eventually go in rescue the girl. she is fully dressed and reading a book. oddly, no one else in the room is doing anything like that. so, i am not sure...i think i missed something... was she WATCHING? did they all just decide to parade around in hopes that she'd decide to get naked, too. when her rescuers show up, the sleazy guy calls her a "flat chested prude" and says they can take her.
i'm sure they had just as much trouble getting home as they did getting there in the first place.

What a bizarre movie...
shampoo, I love the movie "Metropolitan." Actually, I think that all of Whit Stillman's movies are excellent. Unfortunately, he's only made two others, "Barcelona" and "Last Days of Disco," but they're all well worth watching.

I do know a lot of people who don't like the movie, too. It might just be one of those "acquired taste" things.
I've never seen it, but the description given sounds very strange.
Of course, it really doesn't sound like the kind of movie I'd like.
Of course, again, Shampoo generally has very good taste in movies.
ricky sprague, i didn't see the beginning of the movie. maybe i need to watch it from the start. i thought it had a very interesting premise and i liked a lot of it.
i can see that it might not be for everyone. but, then i think that can be said for every movie ever made. hahaa
i havne't seen those other two movies... i will check out that essay. :)
allen tdg, my description maybe didn't do the movie justice. it is a very hard movie to describe. especially since i missed some parts of it.
however, there were some odd parts.
the part where they couldn't seem to get it together to rent a car to go "rescue" this girl who was all of two hours away reminds me of so many things that have happened to me... that's not very odd for RL, but you hardly ever see it played out in movies.
i remember some of the things being discussed in the movie actually being discussed back in the day, but i didn't hang out with rich kids (for the most part) so we saw the DOWNWARD MOBILITY headed our way.. it was surprising there was a movie that came out around the same time that i hadn't seen and that dealt with the subject and concerned kids that, to us, would have surely been all right. of course, their expectations would perhaps be higher.
then there were the manners that i recall. you almost never see that in movies. generally people in movies are omg!
